This American guy was busking right in front of Osaka Castle. Spinning a basketball on each hand, and speaking hilariously broken Japanese to the crowd gathered to watch the spectacle. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip down there, lol.

I took this the day after the Great Tohoku Disaster. I foolheartedly headed down to Tokyo with my friend to go to the birthday party of a guy I barely know. The train ride took four hours. After that ridiculous night out, I took the train down to Enoshima, took some photos, and spent some time in Shimokita on the way back. The next few photos are the result of that.

I also took this at the Nasushiobara "Grand Hunt" Festival. It's really cool, and takes place in an enormous grassy field, a rarity in Saitama, let alone the urban jungles of Tokyo. The "real Japan" feels a lot like a a state fair, truth be told. I love taiko drummers. Not only is it a power, dynamic form of music, it's a community activity, where with a few months of training most people can lean a part in a song. One of the things I'll miss the most about Japan is the sense of community that I felt there, and the the fact that these festivals really bring the community together around traditional culture that might be otherwise forgotten.

I took the next few photos last year during my little fall break in Tochigi with James. This was at the "Nasuno Grand Hunt Festival." I went to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial last wee, the day it first opened to the public. It was pretty cool to be there. At the time, I wrote on FB: "Went there today. It's a great monument to a greater man."

I guess this kid was having some fun with his brother or friend, or cousin or something. It really captured the atmosphere of the festival; especially the heat, I think. I think it's really good for a society as overworked as the Japanese to have a really good excuse to have huge public festivals around every weekend of the summer.
This, and a lot of my other photos from Japan, look a lot better if you listen to this song while looking at them. :)

A photo from Lyz's apartment that I took that day that I came the previous night. I think Drew had a part or something, and I ended up staying at Lyz's all day waiting for a football came that I only watched half of, to come on. We made a delicious Thai red bean curry for lunch - that meal is so strongly connected to my memory; I can taste it now. I think it's because I didn't really eat breakfast that day, 笑. Later, we ended up watching Dexter and reading Proust on her couch. All in all, a good day.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace

I took this near the exit of the Old Imperial Palace in Kyoto, the 京都御所 (Kyoto Gosho). I'd thought this was an HDR shot, but apparently it wasn't. I did get a really good dynamic range though, which is great.
